Others refurbish despite their design. We refurbish because of it.
The circular, repairable design approach behind re:Mix has been discussed on CBC Radio’s What on Earth, highlighting the growing interest in long-lasting, low-waste consumer electronics. So……..
Is there a market in Canada for a $1,200 circular blender?
This is a validation project.
We are exploring whether the open-source re:Mix blender by Open Funk can be responsibly manufactured, supported, and stewarded in Canada — without redesigning the product.
The question is not performance.
The question is whether people will pay for local responsibility, repairability, and circular ownership.
The question we’re testing:
Would you consider paying approximately $1,200 for the same re:Mix design if it were:
- built and supported locally
- fully repairable with long-term parts access
- backed by repairability and refurbishment
- designed to stay in use for decades
We are not taking orders.
We are having a small number of conversations with people who understand products, durability, and long-term ownership — to determine whether this model works at a profitable and sustainable level.
This project is also about possibility.
Possibility that everyday equipment could be treated more like aircraft or industrial tools — maintained, repaired, and stewarded over time — rather than optimized for short ownership cycles.
The goal is not to solve a problem, but to explore whether a different economic and cultural relationship with objects is viable.
Maintainability, not permanence
This project is based on a simple assumption: complex mechanical and electrical objects wear, drift, and eventually fail.
The goal is not to create something that never breaks, but something that can be understood, maintained, and repaired when it does.
Repair and responsibility
The re:Mix blender is designed to be disassembled and repaired. Components are accessible, documentation is available, and replacement parts can be ordered.
Repairs are performed by the owner or by a technician of the owner’s choosing. Appliance Steward does not coordinate repairs, provide diagnosis, or manage service outcomes.
End of use
At the end of its usable life, for whatever reason, the blender may be returned for responsible processing. Returned units will be assessed and, at our discretion, disassembled for parts recovery, full refurbishment and re-sale or materials recycling. No value, credit, or reuse outcome is guaranteed.
